Why work with me, anyway?
1. Therapeutic relationship.
In my world, it’s central to the work. Am I going to make it all about me? I hope not - if I do, fire me. But am I going to throw in an anecdote to help you shift your perspective now and then, or offer a little commiseration when something has been really hard? Yep, I sure am. Because I’m human too - and that needs to be in the room if you’re going to learn how to do things differently.
Think about the best teachers you’ve ever had. They truly got you as a human being, didn’t they? There was something in the way they related to you that said “I know you, I understand you, and you can do this”. That relationship was about a person-to-person connection that offered depth, true caring, and challenge. That’s the kind of dynamic that I want for you, with me.
Never had a good teacher? Let’s repair that.
2. Boundaries.
Though I care deeply for my clients, professionalism is at the core.
I won’t accept the invitation to your wedding, I’m sorry! But I’ll be thinking of you on the day, and sending good wishes your way.
Also, we aren’t going to have a coffee together. In fact, I will pretend not to know you if I ever wander past you on the street (because I’ll always keep your confidentiality, even after.)
That said, know that still, in my heart, I will keep wanting good things for you. I’ll hear a story and think about how that could have helped you. After we complete our work, I’ll wonder how you are, probably pretty regularly, to be honest. And truly, I hope the answer is fabulous.
3. Heaps of experience.
Though I’m newly registered in Australia, I practised in California for over 15 years.
I’ve got the degrees, the trainings, the CV a mile long. But more importantly, I’ve got time in the chair. Over 7000 hours of documented time, according to all of that internship paperwork I still have lying around.
Don’t worry about me, I still get my steps in. I can’t sit around all day.
Still want to see that CV? Head over to the Bio section. I’ll leave it there for you.
4. What works for you?
I’m not only trained in different modalities and theoretical orientations, I’m comfortable using them - and mixing and matching.
All that meditation and mindfulness stuff isn’t for you? No problem. Hate journaling? We can skip it. Not sure you want to analyse your thoughts? I got you.
We will try on techniques and strategies until we find what works for you. Fortunately, my toolbox is pretty big.
This is therapy, your way.
Oh, and if after a couple of sessions, you find that I’m not a good fit for you? No hard feelings. I’ll help you in your search for someone who is.
