As a General Psychologist registered with AHPRA, I have certain rules and ethical obligations when conducting myself on the Internet. This information outlines our social media policy with regard to your expectations to any interactions between us on the Internet, especially if you are, or have received therapy sessions with us in person.
Friending and Following: We do not accept friend or contact requests from current or former clients on any personal social networking site under our personal names (Facebook, LinkedIn, etc). It is our belief that adding clients as friends or contacts on these sites compromises confidentiality and our respective privacy. It may also blur the boundaries of the therapeutic relationship. If you have questions about this, please either bring it up in session or contact us via the options on this website.
CaliforniaTherapy may have public Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram pages with blog posts, psychology news, and professional updates. There is no expectation that you will follow any of these and you are welcome to use your own discretion. If you would like to discuss any of this website’s content, you are welcome to bring it along to our sessions.
We at California Therapy do not follow any current or former clients on any social media forum. We believe casual viewing of clients’ online content outside of the therapy hour blurs boundaries. In addition, viewing your online activities without your consent and without our explicit arrangement towards a specific purpose could potentially have a negative influence on our working relationship. If there are things from your online life that you wish to share, please bring them into sessions.
Interacting: If you are a client and would like to contact us in between sessions, please do so via email or phone, further details can be found in the Contact Us tab. Please do not use social networking sites such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, or blog comments to contact us, as these sites are not secure and we may not read these messages in a timely fashion. Also, engaging with us in this way could compromise your confidentiality. It may also create the possibility that these exchanges become a part of your legal medical record and will need to be documented and archived in your chart.
We prefer using email only for appointment arrangement or modifications modify. Please do not email content related to your therapy sessions, as email is not completely secure or confidential. If you choose to communicate via email, be aware that all emails are retained in the logs of our and your Internet service providers. Any emails we receive from you and any responses become a part of your legal record.
Use of Search Engines: We do not search for clients on Google or Facebook or other search engines.
Business Review Sites: The Australian Psychological Association’s Ethics Code states that it is unethical for psychologists to solicit testimonials from therapy clients: “Psychologists do not solicit testimonials from current therapy clients/patients or other persons who because of their particular circumstances are vulnerable to undue influence.”
If you happen to find our practice or website on review sites such as Yelp, Healthshare, Bing etc, please note that these listings are NOT requests for a testimonial, rating, or endorsement from you as a client. You have a right to express yourself on any site you wish; but due to confidentiality, we cannot respond to any review on any of these sites whether it is positive or negative. We urge you to take your own privacy as seriously as we take my commitment of confidentiality to you. Of course, you are more than welcome to tell anyone you wish about your therapist or how you feel about the treatment provided to you, in any forum of your choosing.
Conclusion: Thank you for taking the time to review our Social Media Policy. If you have questions or concerns about any of these policies and procedures or regarding potential interactions on the Internet, please bring them to our attention so that we can discuss them.
